This time in our Smart City series, we are focusing on the topic of quantum annealing for traffic flow optimization.

We learn from two experts from Hamburg Port Authority AöR, Hermann Grünfeld and Rando Schade, how quantum annealing is used to optimize traffic flow in the Port of Hamburg. Real-time traffic is recorded using sensors and the road network is modeled in detail in a traffic model. The currently measured traffic volume is used to forecast the volume at the traffic light junctions. In this way, the optimization potential of adjacent traffic lights can be calculated to optimize traffic in real time.
